Choosing the Perfect Gown for Your Maternity Photoshoot » Vancouver Newborn Photographer

As a maternity photographer with an experience of over 1000 maternity photoshoots, one question I hear often from clients is: Which gown would look good on me?

My answer depends on several factors, including your size, shape, and what you feel comfortable in. Certain gowns may work better for petite moms versus tall moms, or for glamorous curvy moms versus slim moms. Ultimately, the best choice is the one that makes you feel confident and comfortable.

5 Most Popular Styles for Maternity Photoshoots

With over 50 gowns in our collection, we can create a variety of looks to match your vision. Here are some of our most popular styles and the types of gowns used to bring them to life:

1. Flowy Style

This is the most popular look, and it’s a signature style of Rachel Yoon Photography. To create the flowy effect, we use wraps and long-train gowns. These gowns are versatile and fit all sizes, so you don’t need to worry about fit. Our collection features wraps in various colours, including white, red, blue, rose, purple, turquoise, mustard, beige, grey, burgundy, and brown.
Best for: All sizes and shapes.

2. Tight Fit Style

Stretchy, form-fitting dresses highlight your curves and allow freedom of movement without the need to hold the fabric to show off your bump. Many of our gowns are large sizes, but we clip them to fit you perfectly if needed.
Best for: XS to large sizes and all body shapes.

3. Classic Black Style

This timeless style has gained popularity recently and is one of my personal favourites. The simple elegance of black is stunning, especially in black-and-white photography, which is included in most of our maternity packages. Our black dresses and bodysuits fit small to large sizes, but if you’re unsure about the fit, you can visit our studio to try them on. You can also bring your own black bodysuit or dress—these are easy to find online.
Best for: All sizes and shapes.

4. Boudoir Style

For those who are comfortable showing a bit more skin, the boudoir style is perfect. You can also opt to show your bare belly with this look. Boudoir sessions are an intimate way to celebrate your pregnancy.
Best for: All sizes, especially curvy shapes.

5. Glam Style

We offer a few gowns that will make you feel like royalty. This style works best for small to medium sizes with C+ cup breasts (accounting for your pregnancy size). These gowns are dramatic and puffy, so they may not be as flattering for stockier builds or those who wear large or XL sizes.
Best for: Small to medium sizes with C+ cup breasts.
