During an investor’s day event video game publisher EA revealed a few interesting numbers about their Star Wars games. And while many feel Star Wars is at an all time low right now, after The Acolyte, the numbers EA revealed prove that the brand can still be popular. As long as Lucasfilm is not involved too much…

EA revealed that net earnings for all of their games combined is $5 billion (this includes older titles as well as microtransactions in games like Battlefront). Interesting here is that in 2021 EA said combined net earnings for their Star Wars games are $3 billion, meaning combined sales of Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor plus sales of older titles added another $2 billion in the past three years alone. Fallen Order and Survivor have a combined player count of over 40 million (EA did not provide detailed numbers for each game separately, but we know Fallen Order, all in all, has sold at least 20+ million copies to date, and this was in 2021, so maybe total sales are now in the 25-30 million range, with Survivor having maybe 10-15 million)! While this may not be quite on the level of GTA V which sold something like 65 million copies since its launch 11 years ago, this is still a very good number, in fact, these are really great numbers. Most games never sell these many copies. EA also revealed that Fallen Order keeps selling, it sold about as many copies in the years following its initital release which is pretty unusual, most games do not keep selling in significant numbers years after release. EA also stated that Survivor sales beat expectations, despite a troubled launch on PC with many technical issues. Survivor will also soon be available for the older console generation. That could give sales another boost. A third and final Jedi game is in the works by Respawn (which was confirmed before but once again retiterated during the event). But do not expect a release date before 2026. Fallen Order was released in November 2019, Survivor in April 2023. Given how Lucasfilm will of course receive royalties and minimum guarantees by EA it means, EA, despite all the issues they had with Star Wars, earned them quite a lot of money. And while my personal opinion of Fallen Order and Survivor is not remotely as positive as that of most other people it is good to see that single player only games with no microtransactions do so well for EA; the company that famously said single player games are on their way out (and who famously turned Battlefront II into some kind of online casino), only to be proven wrong by both Fallen Order and Survivor. In fact, it’s the game as a service and new multiplayer titles that are really struggling, losing their publishers hundreds of millions this year alone (Suicide Squad and Concord are some of the worst gaming flops ever). Nothing was said about a potential Battlefront III game by EA. It’s also unclear what the future of Star Wars at EA will be after the third Jedi game is released. But with numbers like these one might think EA may want to release more (single player) games for Star Wars even after the Jedi games trilogy concludes.
