Newly relocated to Hawaii, Yoskay Yamamoto returns to Los Angeles for his new Be My Constellation solo show at Giant Robot 2 on Sawtelle opening on Saturday (10.26). With an emphasis on small sculptures, Yamamoto invites the viewer into sparse scenes — a lone car sitting beneath a retro car or a moon nestled snugly in a pillow. Subtly sculpted, primarily in wood (as well as epoxy resin), the pieces draw from multiple inspirations including the artist’s recent time in the Arizona desert and of course his signature nighttime constellation motiff.
The focus on sculptures is intriguing as recently his small sculptures have been featured primarily in large, sweeping installations of an entire town beneath a floating sky. Collectors now have an opportunity to add a part of that magic in a smaller, more approachable format. Yamamoto has also created enticing hybrid pieces that feature small sculptures nestled on top of paintings on panel. Offering a full range of pieces, Yamamoto has also created stand-alone paintings, though the emphasis is clearly on sculpture.
